Amarenalytics Talks F1 - 2026 Monaco Grand Prix

Let's review the sixth race of the season, the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix 🇲🇨

🏆 Antonelli Masterclass in Monaco as Verstappen and Leclerc Retire at Home

Kimi Antonelli converted pole position into a dominant victory on the streets of Monte Carlo, with Lewis Hamilton taking second for Ferrari and Pierre Gasly delivering the drive of the race to claim a stunning podium from ninth on the grid. It was Antonelli's fourth win of the season and his most complete performance yet, controlling proceedings from the front while chaos erupted behind him.

Monaco lived up to its reputation for drama. Six drivers retired from the race, including Max Verstappen from second on the grid and Charles Leclerc at his home event, a result that will haunt the Monegasque for the rest of the summer. Lando Norris also failed to finish for the second consecutive race, piling further pressure on McLaren's championship ambitions. Behind the carnage, Fernando Alonso started dead last and finished P10 to claim Aston Martin's first point of 2026, which tells its own story about how the afternoon unfolded.

Mercedes now lead the Constructors' Championship with 244 points, clear of Ferrari in second with 165 points. McLaren are third on 116 points and Red Bull Racing fourth on 69 points.

In the Drivers' standings, Antonelli leads on 156 points and is now in a championship class of his own. Hamilton moves up to second with 90 points and Russell holds third with 88 points. Leclerc is fourth on 75 points, while Norris and Piastri are joint fifth on 58 points each. Verstappen sits seventh with 43 points, already 113 points off the lead with the season far from over.

The title race is becoming one-sided. Antonelli leads Hamilton by 66 points and the gap is growing with every round.

👏 The Good

Kimi ANTONELLI (P1 → P1, Winner, 25 pts) Pole to victory at Monaco. Antonelli converts yet another perfect weekend into maximum points. On the streets of Monte Carlo, where mistakes are unforgiving, the Italian was flawless from lights to flag.

Lewis HAMILTON (P3 → P2, 18 pts) Lewis climbs one place from his qualifying position to take a superb P2 for Ferrari. A measured and clinical drive around the Principality from the seven-time world champion.

Pierre GASLY (P9 → P3, 15 pts) The story of the race. Pierre starts ninth and finishes on the podium, gaining six places in a race where overtaking is nearly impossible. Monaco delivered chaos behind the leaders and Gasly was there to capitalise every single time.

Isack HADJAR (P5 → P4, 12 pts) Isack holds a strong grid position and converts it into 12 points. A disciplined and mature drive from the young Frenchman, who continues to impress in 2026.

Oscar PIASTRI (P7 → P5, 10 pts) Oscar advances two places from seventh on the grid to score a valuable 10 points for McLaren. A solid response after a difficult Canada and exactly what the team needed.

Liam LAWSON (P10 → P6, 8 pts) Liam gains four positions from the back of the Q3 group to take 8 points for Racing Bulls. An excellent read of the race from the New Zealander.

Arvid LINDBLAD (P15 → P7, 6 pts) From Q2 and P15 on the grid to P7 at the flag. Arvid makes the most of the retirements ahead of him and banks 6 points after missing the start entirely in Canada. A much-needed result.

Alexander ALBON (P11 → P8, 4 pts) Alex advances three places and scores 4 points for Williams. After his DNF in Canada, this is a welcome recovery for the Thai-British driver.

Esteban OCON (P17 → P9, 2 pts) From P17 on the grid to P9 at the finish, gaining eight places in a race where overtaking is almost impossible. Ocon takes full advantage of the carnage ahead to snatch 2 points for Haas.

Fernando ALONSO (P21 → P10, 1 pt) Fernando starts dead last from Q1 and somehow finishes P10, gaining eleven positions to take Aston Martin's first point of 2026. On a day when half the field retired, Alonso kept his car out of trouble and let the race come to him.

🤔 The Unremarkable

Gabriel BORTOLETO (P11, 0 pts) Gabriel gets through the race cleanly but finishes just outside the points. Another weekend without a reward for Audi but at least the car made it to the flag.

George RUSSELL (P6 → P12, 0 pts) George drops six places from a decent P6 qualifying position and scores nothing. A dreadful afternoon for Russell as the championship picture darkens further. Mercedes will need him to start converting grid positions into points and fast.

Nico HULKENBERG (P13 → P13, 0 pts) Nico holds his qualifying position exactly but that means zero points and another blank weekend. Audi are treading water.

Franco COLAPINTO (P14 → P14, 0 pts) Franco holds his grid spot but takes nothing from it. After back-to-back points finishes, Monaco was a step backwards for the Argentine.

Sergio PEREZ (P18 → P15, 0 pts) Sergio gains three places but remains pointless. Cadillac have yet to trouble the scorers in 2026.

😬 The Ugly

Max VERSTAPPEN (P2 → DNF) Max lines up on the front row alongside Antonelli and retires before seeing the finish. Red Bull will be furious. Starting P2 at Monaco with four world championship titles and coming away with nothing is a result that stings badly.

Charles LECLERC (P4 → DNF) Charles fails to finish at his home race once again. Starting fourth and retiring at Monaco is about as painful as it gets for the Ferrari number one and for the Monegasque crowd packed into the grandstands.

Lando NORRIS (P8 → DNF) Lando starts eighth and does not finish. Back-to-back retirements across Canada and Monaco are a championship disaster for McLaren. The gap to Antonelli is now looking very serious indeed.

Oliver BEARMAN (P19 → DNF) Oliver retires from the back of the grid. Two DNFs in a row for Haas's second car at exactly the wrong time.

Valtteri BOTTAS (P20 → DNF) Valtteri fails to finish from P20. Another retirement for Cadillac's experienced head.

Lance STROLL (P22 → DNF) Lance starts last and retires. Aston Martin collect one point through Alonso but Stroll's retirement means the team remains in crisis with almost nothing to show for the first stretch of 2026.

Carlos SAINZ (P12 → classified P16/DNF) Carlos crosses the line but is classified in P16 after likely running into trouble late in the race. Nothing for Williams from their faster car this weekend, leaving Albon to carry the team's points tally alone.

Episode 6 will cover the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix 🏁 🏎️
